Welcome to the World Women’s Observatory Blog!

The World Women’s Observatory of the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations has been working diligently to make the voices of vulnerable women heard and visible. Led by Mónica Santamarina, the General President of WUCWO, the Observatory was established in 2021 with the specific mission of addressing the needs of women across the globe.

As the only global observatory within the Catholic Church focused on women, the World Women’s Observatory aims to amplify the voices of women and advocate for their rights and opportunities.

    Conversations in the Spirit

In a recent interview with Vatican News, Mónica Santamarina shared insights from the first online “Conversations in the Spirit” linked to the Synod on synodality. These conversations provided a platform for women from diocesan, national, and continental levels to share their thoughts and experiences.

Ms. Santamarina highlighted the importance of synodality as a way for women to participate more fully in the life of the Church with their unique talents and gifts.

    Diaconate, Participation, and Formation

During the conversations, the topic of the diaconate for women emerged as a significant point of discussion. While some women voiced support for the idea of women in the diaconate, the majority emphasized the need for further study and consideration.

Formation opportunities for women and increased participation within the Church were identified as key areas for improvement. The School of Synodality was established as a way to provide training and support for women in these areas.

Mónica Santamarina also highlighted the vital work that women, especially in Africa, contribute to the Church through their selfless service and dedication.

    Networking in Africa

In addition to her role as president of WUCWO, Mónica Santamarina was joined by Sr. Maureen Adhiambo Ogunde in the interview. Sr. Maureen, an educator and formator in Nairobi, highlighted the importance of networking among Catholic women and women religious in Africa.

Through the World Women Observatory, Sr. Maureen and her team aim to unite women from diverse backgrounds and fields of expertise to collaborate and support each other in their missions.

Listening to the stories of women has deeply impacted Sr. Maureen, inspiring her to do more and continue empowering women in her community.

Stay tuned for more updates and insights from the World Women’s Observatory as we strive to create a more inclusive and equitable Church for all women.
