Welcome to our blog where we bring you a special message from the Holy Father for the celebrations and initiatives in Gravina, a town in the Italian region of Apulia. This celebration marks the third centenary of the election to the papacy of Pier Francesco Orsini, the last Pontiff of southern Italy.

During the Mass led by Cardinal Semeraro, it was highlighted that Pier Francesco Orsini wrote 218 Marian sermons, earning him the title of a ‘Marian singer’ due to his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary.

Pope Francis reflects on Benedict XIII – Pier Francesco Orsini as a man of prayer who remained deeply immersed in prayer for the first three days after his election. He was humble and never sought worldly success, instead choosing to be a ‘Companion of the poor’. His guidance was invaluable for clergy dedicated to spiritual renewal.

    Human and Christian experience

On May 29, a Mass was held in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta where Cardinal Marcello Semeraro celebrated the life of Benedict XIII. Pope Francis encourages us to draw inspiration from Orsini’s human and Christian experience to revitalize our own journey of faith.

    Opposed to prestigious commissions

Pope Francis praises his predecessor for renouncing a prestigious career and instead following Jesus by joining the Order of Preachers. Despite being born into aristocracy, he chose a path of humility and service to others.

    Tool to revive the Church

Orsini’s dream of becoming a shepherd of the flock led him to embrace his role as a bishop, using his position to revitalize the Church. He dedicated himself to the spiritual renewal of the clergy and the faithful in the dioceses he served.

    Compassionate love for others

Recognized for his pastoral care and goodness of soul, Pope Francis hopes that Orsini’s legacy will inspire love and compassion among the faithful. Priests are entrusted with the task of embodying the same dedication to their ministry.

    Devotion to Mary

Cardinal Semeraro highlighted Orsini’s great devotion to the Virgin Mary, earning him the title of a ‘Marian singer’. His sermons and prayers were deeply focused on Mary, reflecting his profound faith.

    Concerts and initiatives

The celebrations in Gravina, including concerts and commemorative events, have brought together many individuals dedicated to honoring the life and work of Pope Benedict XIII. The commitment to his beatification continues to inspire the community.
