Pope Francis Mourns the Passing of Cardinal Kelvin Edward Felix

    By Devin Watkins

It is with a heavy heart that Pope Francis sends his deepest condolences to the faithful of the West Indies upon the passing of Cardinal Kelvin Edward Felix at the age of 91.

Cardinal Felix, who served as the Archbishop Emeritus of Castries, passed away on Thursday, May 30. He led the Archdiocese of Castries in Saint Lucia from 1981 until his retirement in 2008, and was honored with the position of Cardinal by Pope Francis in 2014.

In a heartfelt telegram sent on Saturday, Pope Francis expressed his sadness at the news of Cardinal Felix’s passing. He extended his condolences to the clergy, religious, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Castries and the Church in the West Indies.

The Pope acknowledged Cardinal Felix’s dedication to his episcopal ministry in Saint Lucia, particularly his commitment to educating young people and his contributions to the Church in the Caribbean. He joined the faithful in commending the late Cardinal’s soul to the love and mercy of God.

As a gesture of comfort, Pope Francis also imparted his Apostolic Blessing to all who will participate in Cardinal Felix’s funeral Mass.

    A Remarkable Life and Legacy

Cardinal Felix was born in Roseau, Dominica, on February 15, 1933, and led a life of service and scholarship. After being ordained as a priest in 1956, he pursued advanced studies in education, sociology, and anthropology, demonstrating a deep commitment to learning and helping others.

His leadership extended beyond the Archdiocese of Castries, as he served in various roles within the Church, including as president of the Conference of Churches of the Caribbean, president of the Antilles Episcopal Conference, and member of several Pontifical Councils.

His elevation to Cardinal by Pope Francis in 2014 was a testament to his years of dedication and service to the Church. Cardinal Felix’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who follow in his footsteps.

As we bid farewell to a beloved shepherd of the faith, let us honor Cardinal Kelvin Edward Felix’s memory and continue his mission of spreading love, compassion, and faith in all that we do.
