The Urgent Call for Peace in Gaza: Caritas Europa’s Statement
Eight months into the devastating war in Gaza, Caritas Europa has issued a powerful statement reiterating the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages and detainees, and the crucial delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged region.
By Linda Bordoni
Caritas Europa’s International Cooperation and Humanitarian Director, Jean-Yves Terlinden, emphasized the critical nature of the situation in Gaza. With over 37,000 lives lost since October, primarily due to lack of access to essential resources like food and healthcare, the need for a ceasefire is more urgent than ever.
Terlinden highlighted the recent United Nations Security Council resolution as a crucial step towards peace. However, he also expressed concern for the escalating violence in the West Bank, where both Palestinians and Israelis continue to suffer.
Pope Francis’ Pleas for Peace
Pope Francis has been a strong advocate for peace and has called for an end to the violence in Gaza. His efforts have been acknowledged by Caritas Europa, emphasizing the importance of his voice in promoting peace in the region.
In challenging circumstances, Caritas Europa continues its humanitarian work in Gaza, providing aid through mobile clinics despite the ongoing conflict. The organization emphasizes the need for increased funding for UNRWA, a key humanitarian partner in the region.
Advocating for Change
Caritas Europa’s advocacy extends to urging member states to resume and boost their funding to UNRWA, recognizing the essential role the agency plays in delivering aid to the people of Gaza. The organization stands firm in its commitment to promoting peace, dignity, and respect for all individuals affected by the crisis.
Caritas Europa works tirelessly to combat poverty and uphold the dignity of individuals across all faiths. As part of the global Caritas Internationalis network, Caritas Europa joins over 160 members worldwide in the mission for a better and more peaceful future.
