The Vatican’s Ongoing Dialogue with China: Insights from Cardinal Parolin

Recently, at Rome’s Pontifical Urban University, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, shed light on the continuous dialogue between the Vatican and China. The discussion revolved around the Pope’s deep appreciation for the Chinese people, their history, and their culture.

Cardinal Parolin expressed that if given the opportunity, the Pope would eagerly travel to China, a country that holds a special place in his heart. The Cardinal’s remarks were made during the presentation of a book dedicated to Cardinal Celso Costantini and his significant role in bridging the gap between East and West.

Renewal of the Agreement on the Appointments of Bishops

During the presentation, Cardinal Parolin highlighted the importance of the Agreement signed between the Vatican and China regarding the appointments of Bishops. This agreement, initially signed in 2018 and renewed twice thereafter, is set to be further renewed by the end of the year.

    Pope Francis’ Affection for China

On numerous occasions, Pope Francis has expressed his admiration for the Chinese people and their rich cultural heritage. Cardinal Parolin reiterated the Pope’s sentiments and emphasized the need for mutual understanding between the Vatican and China.

A Glimpse into Cardinal Costantini’s Legacy

Cardinal Costantini’s pioneering efforts in fostering dialogue between the Vatican and China were discussed at the event. His role in establishing a pathway for an inculturated Church in China and laying the groundwork for fruitful relationships between Chinese bishops and the Church of Peter were highlighted.

Paving the Way for Continued Dialogue

The “Method of Costantini,” which emphasizes dialogue and collaboration, continues to guide the Vatican’s relations with China. Cardinal Parolin expressed optimism for future advancements in the ongoing dialogue and hopes for strengthened unity between Chinese Catholics and the global Church.

    Looking Towards the Future

Despite challenges, there is hope for further progress in the relationship between the Vatican and China. Through continued dialogue and mutual respect, both parties aim to foster a harmonious partnership under the guidance of Pope Francis, who has shown unwavering support for the Chinese people.
