The Ordination of Bishop Krzysztof Nykiel at St. Peter’s Basilica
On June 22, Fr. Krzysztof Nykiel, Regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary, was ordained a Bishop at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, retired Major Penitentiary of the Holy See.
During his homily, Cardinal Piacenza emphasized the importance of having a vocation as a call to always have the Lord’s gaze, attentive to every brother and sister. He commended Bishop Nykiel for embodying this gaze, especially through his service in the Apostolic Penitentiary.
Bishop Nykiel’s motto, “Patris Corde” (“With a Fatherly Heart”), reflects Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter on St. Joseph as the patron saint of the Universal Church.
“For you, I am a Bishop; with you, I am a Christian”
Cardinal Piacenza highlighted that episcopal consecration is rooted in the sacraments of baptism, priesthood, and diaconate. He referenced St. Augustine’s words on the dual identity of a bishop: one of office and one of grace.
The new Bishop expressed his gratitude to God and Pope Francis for entrusting him with the ministry of the episcopate. His experience in various Vatican offices, including the Apostolic Penitentiary, has prepared him for this new role.
Words of Gratitude from Bishop Nykiel
After the ordination ceremony, Bishop Nykiel thanked God for the gift of the priesthood and Pope Francis for his trust and support. He acknowledged the presence of bishops, priests, and laity who attended the ordination in large numbers.
Bishop with Experience of Ministry in the Holy See
Bishop Krzysztof Nykiel, born in Poland, was ordained a priest in 1990. He holds a master’s degree in theology and a doctorate in canon law. His work in Vatican offices and his appointment as Titular Bishop demonstrate his dedication to serving the Church.
