The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops Stands Against Violence and Excessive Taxation

Recently, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) released a strong statement condemning the violent killing of young protesters who were demonstrating against the government’s controversial tax plan. The bishops have called for peace, offered condolences to the affected families, and urged the government to address the grievances of its citizens.

As news agencies report a tense calm in Nairobi after deadly clashes, the nation mourns the loss of 23 lives and hundreds of injuries during the protests. President William Ruto’s decision to send back the Finance Bill 2024 to parliament indicates the gravity of the situation, marking a significant crisis in his two-year tenure.

    The Call for Change

The KCCB has been vocal in its opposition to the Finance Bill and the excessive taxation burdening Kenyan citizens. In a statement, the bishops urge President Ruto to listen to the voices of the people and address their concerns. They emphasize the need for a fair tax regime that does not push families further into poverty.

Recognizing the desperation of young people, the bishops call for a responsible government that provides opportunities for employment and economic growth. They highlight the need for transparency in the use of taxpayer money and encourage leaders to prioritize the well-being of the youth.

A Plea for Peace and Engagement

While commending the youth for their proactive stance, the bishops warn against violence and manipulation by extremist elements. They stress the importance of peaceful protest and constructive engagement with the government to bring about meaningful change.

In the midst of the crisis, the KCCB extends condolences to the families of the deceased, condemns the use of excessive force by the police, and advocates for justice and accountability. The bishops call upon all Kenyans to seek peaceful solutions and uphold the sanctity of life.

As the nation grapples with unrest and uncertainty, the KCCB’s message resonates as a beacon of hope and unity in challenging times. Let us stand together in prayer and solidarity for the well-being of our country and its people.
