Celebrating 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations between the Holy See and Rwanda
On 28 June 2024, the Apostolic Nunciature to Rwanda came alive to mark the 11th anniversary of Pope Francis’ pontificate and the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Rwanda. The event was a momentous occasion graced by government officials, diplomats, and members of the local Church.
Embracing Human Fraternity and Peaceful Co-existence
The celebration witnessed the coming together of government officials, led by Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, who emphasized the importance of Pope Francis’ message of promoting human fraternity and peaceful co-existence globally. The local Church, represented by country’s Bishops and Archbishop Arnaldo Catalan, the Apostolic Nuncio to Rwanda, also highlighted the significance of social welfare programs and pastoral care in fostering unity and compassion in Rwanda.
Rwanda’s Educational and Healthcare Landscape
Archbishop Catalan acknowledged the strong cooperation between the Holy See and Rwanda over the past six decades, noting the Church’s significant contribution to education and healthcare in the country. With over 3209 schools, 180 vocational and technical institutions, and various healthcare facilities, the Catholic Church has been instrumental in providing quality services to Rwandans.
United for a Better Tomorrow
Ambassador Nduhungirehe commended the Catholic Church for its dedication to building a better future for Rwandans through education and healthcare initiatives. He reiterated Rwanda’s commitment to promoting unity and cooperation among nations, echoing the spirit of human fraternity championed by Pope Francis.
The celebrations extended into the following day, coinciding with the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul, symbolizing the unity and solidarity that continue to define the longstanding relationship between Rwanda and the Holy See.
This event was not just a celebration but a reaffirmation of the shared values of peace, unity, and compassion that define the bond between Rwanda and the Holy See. Together, they stand as an example of cooperation and solidarity for the world to emulate.
