Welcome to the vibrant city of Trieste, where excitement is brewing for the upcoming visit of Pope Francis on Sunday, July 7. This special occasion marks the conclusion of the 50th Italian Catholic Social Week, a gathering that delves deep into the heart of democracy.
“Il Piccolo,” a prominent newspaper, has unveiled a never-before-seen text by Pope Francis as an introduction to an anthology of his speeches and messages titled “At the Heart of Democracy.” This text, curated by “Il Piccolo” and Libreria Editrice Vaticana, offers readers a unique insight into the Pope’s thoughts and reflections.
In anticipation of my visit to Trieste, a city rich in diverse cultures, religions, and ethnicities, I am thrilled to be a part of the Italian Catholic Social Week. This year’s theme, “At the Heart of Democracy: Participation throughout history and into the future,” resonates deeply in today’s world.
Democracy, a concept rooted in ancient Greece, empowers people through representation. However, in modern times, we face challenges like “democratic skepticism,” where the essence of democracy is at risk. The allure of populism poses a threat to the core values of democracy.
Central to democracy is the idea of being “together,” emphasizing the importance of participation. Don Lorenzo Milani’s words echo this sentiment, highlighting the power of collective action in addressing shared challenges. Collaboration and dialogue are essential in navigating the complexities of our time.
Reflecting on the essence of democracy, I affirm that unity is strength. Together, we can overcome obstacles and create positive change. Genuine democracy calls for active engagement, a willingness to embrace different perspectives, and a commitment to the common good.
As we look towards the future, let us engage in democratic processes to address pressing issues such as migration, demographic shifts, and peacebuilding. Trieste, a city embracing diversity, serves as a symbol of unity and brotherhood in a world marred by conflict.
Let us embrace a culture of participation and cooperation, as we strive for a more inclusive and equitable society. From the shores of Trieste, may a renewed dedication to democratic values flourish, paving the way for a brighter and more connected future.
