One of the topics that captivates the Russians these days, beyond military events or economic fluctuations, is the elections in the United States. They are also intrigued by elections in France, Britain, and discussions around the formation of the new European Commission. However, among the people, the question “Are you with Biden or with Trump?” is the hot topic. Not so much for ideological or geopolitical reasons, but for the mysterious charm of camaraderie and repulsion towards the great enemy, who is seen as a Big Brother in many aspects.
The history and geography similarities are coupled with recent political system differences. Russia has never experienced democratic competition under the czars and the Soviets and looks at the American opposition of factions with a mix of scorn and envy. The Americans’ superpower status and the global interest in their electoral competitions both attract and annoy the Russians, making them unable to remain indifferent to their affairs and the personalities of their leaders.
