Welcome to the latest update on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Plenary Assembly, where significant resolutions have been approved to strengthen campaigns for ‘integral ecology’.

Leading church officials revealed this exciting news at a press briefing held in Cagayan de Oro City in the southern Philippines. CBCP President Bishop Pablo Virgilio David highlighted the Church’s consistent efforts in raising awareness about environmental abuses in the country.

One major resolution from the assembly is the decision for the CBCP to become a co-signatory on a joint letter with other Episcopal Conferences, urging the celebration of the Feast of Creation in unity with neighboring Christian Churches.

Furthermore, the Bishops’ Conference has committed to divesting from financial institutions that support environmentally destructive businesses by 2025. Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, vice-president of Caritas Philippines, mentioned the implementation of a “scorecard” to help identify these harmful investments.

In addition to the financial initiatives, the CBCP reaffirmed its stand on refusing donations from individuals and companies engaged in environmentally harmful activities. This move aims to ensure that all contributions align with the Church’s mission for a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Fr. Manuel T. Catral praised the bishops for their commitment but urged them to provide practical assistance to communities affected by environmental projects. He emphasized the importance of supporting these vulnerable groups in protecting our shared home.

To promote sustainable energy solutions, the bishops have endorsed the “10 million solar rooftops challenge,” in collaboration with civil society organizations, to encourage the use of solar energy in households across the Philippines.

The CBCP’s efforts extend beyond financial and environmental initiatives, as they have elevated the “Ecology Desk” to the “Integral Ecology Ministry” in all ecclesiastical jurisdictions in the country. This decision underscores the Church’s dedication to holistic environmental stewardship.

Overall, the latest outcomes from the CBCP Plenary Assembly demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental justice and sustainability. Stay tuned for more updates on their ongoing efforts to protect our planet and support vulnerable communities.
