Get ready to join Pope Francis at the stunning Marian Basilica of St. Mary Major for the Vespers on August 5, as we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Snows and the Anniversary of the Basilica’s dedication.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov
Every year on August 5, the faithful in Rome and pilgrims come together at the Basilica of St. Mary Major to honor Our Lady of the Snows, and this year, they will have the honor of Pope Francis’ presence.
The Pope will attend the Vespers at 5:30 p.m., led by Archbishop Rolandas Makrickas, Coadjutor Archpriest of the Basilica, as confirmed by the Holy See Press Office.
Pope Francis has always had a special bond with the Basilica, frequently visiting and praying before the icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani, both before and after his Apostolic Journeys.
As part of his personal tradition, the Pope is likely to visit St. Mary Major again before his upcoming Apostolic Journey to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore in September.
Celebrating the Solemnity and Dedication Anniversary
On the day, Pope Francis will join the Roman community for the special liturgical celebrations marking the Solemnity and the Anniversary of the Basilica’s dedication.
An early morning Mass at 10 a.m. will see white flower petals falling from the ceiling in tribute to Our Lady of the Snows, a tradition repeated during the evening Vespers at 5 p.m.
Following the Vespers, Archbishop Emilio Nappa will lead another Eucharistic celebration at 7 p.m., continuing the uplifting day of worship.
The Miracle of the August Snowfall
Legend has it that in 352, the Blessed Virgin Mary caused snow to fall on the Esquiline Hill during the sweltering August heat. This miraculous event led to the construction of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in honor of the Blessed Mother’s wish.
Despite the summer heat, the snow fell in a rectangular shape on August 5, 352, remaining intact and inspiring the creation of the magnificent basilica completed in 354.
Resuming Activities
After his customary July break, Pope Francis will return to his regular duties, starting with the Wednesday General Audiences on August 7, following his Sunday Angelus addresses to the faithful in St. Peter’s Square.
