Welcome to “AI Ethics for Peace” Event
Exciting news! The two-day event dedicated to the ethical development of Artificial Intelligence has kicked off in Hiroshima, Japan. Religious leaders from all corners of the world have gathered to discuss and promote AI ethics. One of the highlights of the event will be the signing of the Rome Call, a document emphasizing the importance of a multi-religious approach towards AI ethics.
Here, we share the message sent by His Holiness, Pope Francis, to the participants of the “AI Ethics for Peace” meeting:
Message from the Holy Father
Dear friends, the intersection of artificial intelligence and peace is of utmost significance. As emphasized during my address to the G7 leaders, the decisions made by machines should not overshadow the critical role of human decision-making. Human dignity hinges on preserving our ability to make choices about our lives without being reliant on machines. Let us ensure that humans retain control over AI programs to safeguard our dignity.
I commend your initiative and urge you to demonstrate a unified commitment to protecting human dignity in this era of technological advancement.
The choice of Hiroshima as the venue for discussions on AI and peace holds great symbolic value amidst the current global conflicts. It is imperative that we come together to advocate for the prohibition of lethal autonomous weapons and the promotion of human oversight in AI development.
Embracing the cultural diversity and religious insights in regulating AI will be pivotal in the successful management of technological innovation.
May this gathering foster unity, cooperation, and peace. Let us all strive to be ambassadors of peace in our world.
FRANCIS
