Welcome to our blog where we explore the importance of skills acquisition for youth on World Youth Skills Day! Declared by UNESCO, this day is celebrated on 15 July every year with the theme ‘Youth Skills for Peace and Development.’ As we approach the 10th anniversary of this event in 2024, let’s reflect on the significance of empowering young people with essential skills.
Our guest writer, Sr. Oluwakemi Akinleye from Lagos, beautifully expresses that youth are a gift to society. In today’s challenging economic climate, learning a skill has become a crucial asset alongside academic qualifications. As UNESCO highlights, youth face various challenges such as disrupted education, online negativity, and economic inequality. Learning skills like information technology, graphics, catering, and more can not only unleash one’s talents but also provide employment opportunities.
Are African youth interested in skills acquisition?
While many African youth have embraced skills acquisition and improved their lives, some still resort to fraudulent means for quick money. This mindset can lead to dangerous paths like human and drug trafficking. However, there are also young people eager to learn skills but lack the financial means to do so.
Arise Foundation in collaboration with Nigerian women religious
In a heartwarming initiative, the Arise Foundation in the UK, partnering with the Nigerian Conference of Women Religious (NCWR), has been empowering Nigerian youth since 2022. Over 200 young individuals have benefited from funding for skill acquisition courses, enabling them to learn catering, tailoring, web development, and more. This support has transformed lives like Olaide, Ogechi, Blessing, and Kingsley, who can now earn a living from their acquired skills.
Contributing to a world of peace and development
As we celebrate World Youth Skills Day, let’s recognize the potential of our youth in creating a more peaceful and prosperous world. By investing in their training, we can equip them to tackle issues like poverty, trafficking, and contribute to global development. Let’s heed UNESCO’s call to nurture responsible citizens and build a sustainable future for all. Together, we can empower youth to shape a better tomorrow!
