Cardinal Parolin’s Message of Hope and Closeness in Ukraine

During his recent visit to Ukraine, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State, brought with him a powerful message of hope and closeness from Pope Francis. Despite the challenges and difficulties we may face, the Cardinal affirmed that nothing is impossible for God, who is greater than our fears and limitations.

    By Deborah Castellano Lubov

“While our hopes may be diminished, everything is possible for God who is greater than ourselves and our capabilities…”

Cardinal Parolin’s visit to Ukraine from 19-24 July included a special appointment as Pontifical Legate for the pilgrimage of Ukrainian Latin Rite Catholics to the Marian Shrine of Berdychiv. This marked his first visit to the country since the Russian invasion began in February 2024.

Expressing his gratitude for the progress made in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church since his last visit in 2016, Cardinal Parolin emphasized the importance of faith and prayer during these challenging times. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by the Ukrainian people but highlighted the prophetic role of the Church in calling for peace and unity.

“God is greater than ourselves, our hearts, and our capabilities…”

Throughout his visit, Cardinal Parolin reiterated Pope Francis’ message of closeness and solidarity with the people of Ukraine. The Pope’s unwavering support for peace and reconciliation was evident in his recent Angelus address, where he empathized with the suffering caused by the ongoing conflict.

Cardinal Parolin’s physical presence in Ukraine symbolized the Church’s commitment to standing in solidarity with those in need. He emphasized the importance of working towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict and offered his prayers for a brighter future for the Ukrainian people.

As Cardinal Parolin concluded his visit, he expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to be in Ukraine and share this important moment with the faithful. His presence served as a reminder of the Church’s unwavering commitment to peace, hope, and unity in the face of adversity.

Despite the challenges ahead, Cardinal Parolin’s visit to Ukraine reaffirmed the power of faith, prayer, and closeness in times of uncertainty. Through God’s grace and the support of the Church, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow.
