Hidden among the chaos and violence in North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a beacon of hope shines brightly in the form of Sister Agnieszka Gugała, a dedicated Polish missionary sister.

Unlike many humanitarian workers who have evacuated the region, Sister Agnieszka has chosen to stay behind, echoing her commitment to the people she serves. “We will only leave with the people in our care,” she asserts, embodying unwavering solidarity in the face of adversity.

    By Beata Zajączkowska

Sister Agnieszka’s journey to Africa began two decades ago when she felt the call to her missionary vocation during her high school days. Her path led her to the Congregation of the Sisters of the Angels, where she found her purpose in serving others.

For the past ten years, Sister Agnieszka has been managing a hospital and nutrition center for children in the remote village of Ntamugenga, tackling daily challenges with humor and resilience. From sourcing supplies to negotiating rebel-controlled checkpoints, she is a pillar of strength in a region plagued by conflict and instability.

A Beacon of Hope in a Sea of Despair

Despite facing relentless challenges and threats, Sister Agnieszka remains committed to her mission of providing essential aid and comfort to the vulnerable population of North Kivu. With over 100 armed groups vying for control of valuable resources, the civilians bear the brunt of the ongoing violence and displacement.

As Sister Agnieszka navigates the perilous landscape of conflict, her presence offers a glimmer of hope to those in despair. “Our presence gives people hope and ensures their safety. They call us ‘our sisters,’ which signifies the bond we share with them,” she remarks, highlighting the deep connection forged through her selfless service.

    Light in the Darkness

Amidst the chaos and suffering, Sister Agnieszka and her fellow Sisters of the Angels stand as beacons of light, providing refuge and assistance to those in need. Despite the harrowing realities of war and disease, they remain steadfast in their commitment to easing the burdens of the afflicted.

As the region grapples with escalating violence and external threats, Sister Agnieszka’s dream of lasting peace resonates with the aspirations of the local population. Through her unwavering dedication and resilience, she embodies the hope for a brighter future in a land ravaged by conflict.

As we reflect on Sister Agnieszka’s courageous journey in the heart of turmoil, let us join hands in prayer for her and her companions, as they continue to be a beacon of hope and resilience in the midst of adversity.
