    La piramide più antica dell’Egitto, quella a gradoni di Saqqara, potrebbe aver sfruttato un innovativo ascensore d’acqua per la costruzione. Lo suggerisce uno studio pubblicato su Plos One da un team di ricercatori francesi dell’istituto Paleotechnic di Parigi.

    La piramide a gradoni di Saqqara, costruita come tomba per il faraone Djoser della terza dinastia nel 2.680 a.C., ha lasciato perplessi gli archeologi sul metodo utilizzato per la sua edificazione. Secondo la nuova analisi multidisciplinare condotta dai francesi, il recinto di Gisr el-Mudir nelle vicinanze (con una funzione ancora misteriosa) avrebbe potuto essere impiegato come diga per catturare acqua e sedimenti.

    Una serie di compartmenti sotterranei intorno alla piramide avrebbe potuto fungere da filtro per le acque, permettendo ai sedimenti di depositarsi mentre l’acqua pulita scorreva attraverso di essi: l’acqua trattata sarebbe poi stata indirizzata a due pozzi all’interno della piramide, dove la forza del sollevamento avrebbe aiutato a trasportare un galleggiante con le pietre da costruzione.

    Lo studio ipotizza che gli antichi egizi potessero alternare diversi metodi di costruzione, come l’uso di rampanti, concentrandosi sul sistema idraulico per sollevare i massi in presenza di acqua sufficiente: ulteriori ricerche sono necessarie per comprendere l’approvvigionamento idrico dell’epoca e come veniva regolato il flusso attraverso i pozzi.
