The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Timor-Leste are buzzing with excitement as they eagerly await the arrival of Pope Francis for his 45th Apostolic Journey abroad, scheduled for 9-11 September. The sisters are deeply involved in preparing for the momentous occasion, which includes organizing catechism lessons and outreach in rural parishes ahead of the Pope’s visit.
Sister Angelita Gomes, along with Sisters Ivonia Carmelinda Belo and Sanzinha Maria Auxiliadora de Jesus, have been appointed as coordinators for the main event on 10 September, when Pope Francis will celebrate Mass at the Tasi Tolu esplanade.
Approximately 700,000 faithful from Timor and neighbouring countries are expected to attend the Mass, making it a momentous occasion for the entire nation. The preparations involve a collaboration between the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the Claretian religious, and the Salesians, with over 250 people working on decoration alone.
Spiritual and Material Preparation
The sisters are not only focused on the material aspects of preparation but also on the spiritual readiness of the faithful. Catechism lessons have been organized in the dioceses of Dili, Maliana, and Baucau, covering various aspects of the Pope’s mission and the theme of the visit, ‘that your faith may become your culture.’

They are eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to show their love and reverence for the successor of Peter, a moment that holds special significance for the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.
