Discovering a nest containing 78 sea turtle eggs on a beach in the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area in the southern-central province of Binh Thuan, Vietnam, has sparked excitement among conservationists. These eggs are believed to belong to the rare species of hawksbill turtle.
The area is well-known for being a rich source of food for sea turtles, yet they had not laid eggs in the region despite visiting in both 2022 and 2023. The nesting season typically occurs between May and October, during which park staff and volunteers diligently patrol nesting sites to ensure the safety of these endangered creatures.
Stretching over approximately 12,500 hectares, the marine protected area boasts a diverse ecosystem, including coral reefs and seagrass meadows, serving as a crucial habitat and nesting ground for numerous rare and ecologically valuable marine species. Since 2014, hundreds of volunteers have successfully protected numerous turtle nests, ensuring the hatching and safe release of thousands of hatchlings back into the sea.
