Originating from a devout family in Fribourg, Switzerland, Grandjean’s aspiration to serve the Church was deeply rooted in his upbringing. After completing the Swiss Army’s recruitment school, he spent eight years in the Pontifical Swiss Guards from 2011 to 2019.
His introduction to the life of a Swiss Guard at the age of 21 exposed him to the unwavering faith of pilgrims, which left a lasting impression on him. This encounter served as a catalyst for his personal spiritual awakening, prompting him to dedicate moments of prayer and reflection while on duty.
Through his service in the Swiss Guards, Grandjean nurtured the essential qualities for his spiritual growth, setting the foundation for his transition towards a priestly vocation that resonated with his soul.
Embracing the Call to Seminary
Despite initial surprise from his family at his change of direction, Grandjean was met with overwhelming support and encouragement, particularly from his father who, before his passing, affirmed, “Go; this is your path.”
During the 2013 conclave, Grandjean witnessed the grandeur of the Church and the dedication of Pope Francis, a moment that solidified his understanding of the shared values of tradition, innovation, security, and service between the Vatican City State and the Swiss Guard Corps.
The core values of discipline and camaraderie that bind both these institutions echo in Grandjean’s commitment to selfless service, whether as a Swiss Guard or a seminarian.
Navigating the Challenges
Reflecting on the sacrifices required in his journey as a Servus servorum Dei, the Servant of the Servants of God, Grandjean acknowledged the social challenges and sense of loneliness that comes with the commitment to celibacy. Despite this, he found solace and familial love in serving fellow believers.
Expressing concern for a society drifting towards comfort and secularization, Grandjean emphasized the importance of sacrifice and enduring commitment, urging others to have courage in their faith journeys, with the certainty that Christ’s presence is unwavering.
A Message of Resilience
Despite the declining number of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, Grandjean highlighted the enduring need for experienced priests whose guidance brings joy and direction to those seeking spiritual counsel.
In essence, Grandjean’s message encapsulates the fulfilling journey he experienced from his days in the Guard Corps to his calling to the priesthood. The Church and its ministers, he emphasized, must always be a beacon of hope for the faithful, as the sacrifices made in service are rewarded abundantly.
