In an exclusive interview with Vatican News, Didier Grandjean, a 34-year-old former member of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, shared his remarkable journey from combat training to the priesthood. His story is one of transformation, from wearing the Swiss Guard uniform to donning the Roman collar, symbolizing his shift towards a more spiritually fulfilling path.

Originating from a devout family in Fribourg, Switzerland, Grandjean’s aspiration to serve the Church was deeply rooted in his upbringing. After completing the Swiss Army’s recruitment school, he spent eight years in the Pontifical Swiss Guards from 2011 to 2019.
His introduction to the life of a Swiss Guard at the age of 21 exposed him to the unwavering faith of pilgrims, which left a lasting impression on him. This encounter served as a catalyst for his personal spiritual awakening, prompting him to dedicate moments of prayer and reflection while on duty.
Through his service in the Swiss Guards, Grandjean nurtured the essential qualities for his spiritual growth, setting the foundation for his transition towards a priestly vocation that resonated with his soul.
