Great news for Italian relay team at the Olympic Games in Paris! The Italian 4 x 100 relay team has made it to the final thanks to a lucky break. In the first semifinal, the Italian team – made up of Melluzzo, Jacobs, Desalu, and Tortu – finished in fifth place (only the top three teams qualified directly, along with the two best times from both semifinals) with a time of 38”07.
The second semifinal was slower, allowing Italy to snatch the second and final qualified time. Along with Italy, the final scheduled for tomorrow at 7:47 pm will also feature the USA, Great Britain, South Africa, China, France, Canada, and Japan.
“Tomorrow will be another race. The important thing is that we made it to the final,” said Marcell Jacobs optimistically after Italy secured their spot in the 4×100 final through the lucky break. “I feel like I ran really strong, but the data might say otherwise. Fausto and I need to work on something at the exchange,” he added. Marcell Jacobs is confident as he looks ahead to the final.
“We’re in. We’ll give it our all tomorrow,” said Matteo Melluzzo, who had a solid first leg. Filippo Tortu shared a similar sentiment: “We had a decent race to make it to the final, but it’s not enough for our ambitions. Tomorrow we’ll be in lane two, which will make it challenging, but we never give up.”
“Now we’ll leave the stadium and have a team meeting to analyze what worked and what didn’t. This is our second consecutive Olympic final. We’ll try to tap into what made us perform well three years ago and use it to our advantage tomorrow,” Jacobs concluded with an encouraging note.
