Cardinal Zuppi Continues Peace Mission with Beijing Delegate Li Hui
Reaching across borders and oceans to promote peace, the Holy See Press Office has confirmed a recent phone call between Cardinal Matteo Zuppi and Li Hui, the Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Eurasian Affairs. Cardinal Zuppi, appointed by Pope Francis in 2023 to undertake a peace mission to Kyiv, Moscow, Washington, and Beijing, continues to pursue paths of peace and dialogue in conflict-ridden regions.
Described as a “cordial conversation,” the discussion between Cardinal Zuppi and Li Hui highlighted the pressing need for international cooperation to ensure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The two leaders expressed deep concern for the current situation and emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue among all parties involved.
Mission for Peace
Since his appointment by Pope Francis, Cardinal Zuppi has been tirelessly working to ease tensions and promote peaceful solutions in conflict areas. His travels to Kyiv, Moscow, Washington, and most recently, Beijing, have allowed him to engage with political and Church representatives, seeking common ground for reconciliation and understanding.
In a statement following the phone call, the Holy See Press Office reiterated Cardinal Zuppi’s commitment to pursuing paths of peace and his unwavering belief in the power of dialogue to resolve conflicts.
Honoring the Blessed Mother
On the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, Cardinal Zuppi reflected on the universal suffering present in today’s world, drawing parallels between the pain experienced by the Virgin Mary and the suffering of those affected by conflict and war. He urged unity and peace, invoking the image of the “Mater Dolorosa” present in countries around the world where violence and injustice prevail.
As Cardinal Zuppi’s mission for peace continues, the Blessed Mother’s presence serves as a guiding light, reminding us of the need for compassion, understanding, and a shared commitment to building a more peaceful world.
