    Il mistero della monumentale Pietra dell’Altare di Stonehenge finalmente risolto: la composizione chimica dei suoi minerali rivela che il blocco di arenaria, precedentemente creduto proveniente dal Galles, in realtà ha origine in Scozia, con un incredibile viaggio di oltre 700 chilometri. Lo studio, recentemente pubblicato sulla rivista Nature da un team internazionale guidato dal geologo britannico Anthony Clarke dell’australiana Curtin University, ha portato a questa straordinaria scoperta.

    “L’analisi ha rivelato che granuli specifici di minerali nella Pietra dell’Altare hanno un’età tra 1.000 e 2.000 milioni di anni, mentre altri minerali risalgono a circa 450 milioni di anni“, spiega Clarke. “Questa firma chimica distintiva indica chiaramente che la pietra proviene dalle rocce delle Orcadi, in Scozia, a una distanza di almeno 750 chilometri da Stonehenge.

    Dato l’origine scozzese della pietra, le implicazioni sono affascinanti, considerando le limitazioni tecnologiche dell’era neolitica, su come questo massiccio blocco sia stato trasportato fino a Stonehenge intorno al 2600 a.C.“.

    Questa scoperta “evidenzia un livello significativo di coordinamento sociale durante il Neolitico e fornisce un quadro affascinante della Gran Bretagna preistorica”, aggiunge il co-autore dello studio, Chris Kirkland. “Il trasporto di un carico così imponente via terra dalla Scozia al sud dell’Inghilterra sarebbe stato incredibilmente arduo, suggerendo una possibile rotta di spedizione marittima lungo la costa britannica. Questo implica la presenza di reti commerciali a lunga distanza e un livello di organizzazione sociale più avanzato di quanto si pensasse”.
