The Nigerian bishops have issued a powerful warning amidst the ongoing violent protests against President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, emphasizing the pressing need to address the grievances raised by protesters. Archbishop Lucius Ugorji of Owerri, the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference (CBCN), delivered this message during the bishops’ assembly in Auchi, Edo State.

As Nigeria grapples with escalating unrest sparked by the hashtag #EndBadGovernance, the bishops underscored the gravity of the situation. The protests stem from deep-rooted issues of poverty, hardship, and corruption, exacerbated by President Tinubu’s economic measures aimed at tackling the country’s mounting debt and budget deficits. However, these reforms have only deepened the economic woes faced by many Nigerians, leading to widespread discontent and violent clashes in certain regions.

Amidst the chaos, Archbishop Ugorji condemned both the violence by rioters and the excessive use of force against protesting youths by security forces. He criticized the government’s response, highlighting the urgency of addressing poverty, hardship, and corruption to prevent further unrest. The Archbishop warned that Nigeria is on the brink of a social explosion, emphasizing the need for immediate action to defuse the situation.

While President Tinubu’s administration defends the economic reforms as vital for long-term growth, citizens are demanding immediate relief from their economic hardships. The protests have sparked a national dialogue on the future trajectory of the country, with some hopeful for positive reforms and others fearing deepening instability.

As Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads, the bishops urge policymakers to heed the cries of their people and work towards a sustainable solution. The nation’s future hangs in the balance, with the bishops cautioning that failure to address the root causes of discontent could have dire consequences. Nigeria must act swiftly to avert a potential crisis and pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future.
