Welcome to the recent gathering of Catholic Diocesan priests from Zambia’s eleven dioceses and archdioceses, all brought together by the Association of Zambian Diocesan Catholic Clergy (AZADCC). This four-day national conference took place in the charming town of Kabwe under the theme “Priests Transforming Communities and the Environment in the Spirit of Synodality” at the Stephen Luwisha School Hall in Kabwe Diocese.
An Emphasis on Brotherhood
The host Bishop, Clement Mulenga SDB, set the tone with his opening remarks, highlighting the crucial role brotherhood plays in the lives of priests. Stressing the significance of unity and camaraderie among priests, Bishop Mulenga underlined the importance of serving God’s people together.
“This national convocation of Zambian Diocesan Catholic Clergy is a pivotal moment that fosters a deep sense of solidarity among priests in their service to the Church and society,” remarked Bishop Mulenga. He emphasized how this conference plays a vital role in both individual and collective priestly life and ministry.
The wish of the Catholic Bishops in Zambia is to see a cohesive diocesan Catholic clergy working hand in hand, inspired by the spirit of the Synod on Synodality. They envision a fraternity that cares for each other in profound solidarity, as reiterated by the Kabwe prelate.
Fostering Collaboration with the Government
Zambia’s President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, graced the opening ceremonies as a guest of honor, expressing his Government’s commitment to nurturing a harmonious relationship with the Church. President Hichilema embraced Pope Francis’ vision of Synodality as a guiding principle for a shared responsibility towards the well-being of the Church and the Zambian people.
The Weight of Priesthood
During the conference, AZADCC’s national President, Fr. Augustine Mwewa, affirmed the dedication of the association members to promoting justice and peace across Zambia. In his closing speech, Bishop Director Raphael Mweempwa of Monze Diocese thanked the diocesan clergy for their proactive engagement in pastoral work, especially in challenging areas.
Bishop Mweempwa reminded the priests of the immense responsibility and profound dignity that comes with the priesthood. He emphasized that their role is not for personal glory but for the sanctification of God’s people. The office of priesthood demands a commitment to be living witnesses of Christ and to lead by example in their communities.
