Empowering Communities: Caritas PNG’s Stand Against Violence
Welcome to Papua New Guinea, where Caritas is making a difference in the fight against violence based on accusations of sorcery. In a recent conversation with Mavis Tito, the National Director of Caritas Papua New Guinea, we gained insight into the organization’s impactful work in the country.
As Papua New Guinea welcomes Pope Francis, Mavis Tito sheds light on the challenges faced by the people of this Pacific island nation. In a discussion with Claudia Torres in Port Moresby, the capital city, Ms. Tito highlighted the essential role Caritas PNG plays in supporting vulnerable populations.
Fostering Unity Across Religious Divides
Despite the predominant Christian population in Papua New Guinea, Caritas works tirelessly to promote unity among various religious denominations. Through Church Partnership and interreligious programs with the Muslim community, Caritas PNG aims to create a harmonious environment for all residents.
Addressing Sorcery Accusation-Related Violence
One of the pressing issues facing Papua New Guinea is Sorcery accusations that lead to violence against vulnerable individuals, particularly women. Mavis Tito emphasized the detrimental impact of such attacks on widows, single mothers, and the elderly.
She highlighted the underlying factors contributing to Sorcery accusation-related violence, including alcohol and drug influences, as well as societal frustrations stemming from unemployment and inadequate essential services. In response to these challenges, the Catholic Church in PNG, led by Bishop Justin Ain Soongie, is actively combating SARV by educating and mobilizing young people to stand against this form of violence.
A Message of Humility from The Pope
As Pope Francis witnesses the struggles faced by the people of Papua New Guinea, Mavis Tito commends his humility and awareness of the country’s economic challenges. Addressing rising inflation and the increasing cost of living, Tito reflects on the Pope’s modest accommodations and transportation choices during his visit.
Through its commitment to empowering communities and advocating for justice, Caritas PNG exemplifies the spirit of compassion and solidarity. As they continue their vital work in Papua New Guinea, the organization’s efforts serve as a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
