Welcome Pope Francis to Papua New Guinea
As Pope Francis arrived at his residence in Papua New Guinea, he was warmly greeted by Sir Bob Bofeng Dada, the Governor General of the country. The Governor General praised the Catholic Church’s long-standing advocacy for peace, justice, human rights, and action against climate change.
Before making his way to the Apec Haus in Port Moresby to meet with civil authorities, Pope Francis paid a courtesy visit to the Government House in Konedobu, the capital’s suburb. Sir Bob Bofeng Dada, on behalf of the government and people of Papua New Guinea, welcomed the Pope and highlighted the historical and spiritual significance of his visit.
Recognizing the Catholic Church’s presence in the country since the mid-19th century, the Governor General commended its essential role in providing education, healthcare, and spiritual care. He acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the Church to bring these services to even the most remote areas of Papua New Guinea.
Advocacy for Human Rights and Climate Change
Sir Bob Bofeng Dada also praised the Church’s advocacy for peace, justice, respect for human dignity, gender equality, and global action against climate change. He emphasized the significant partnership between the government and the Church, including financial support and the integration of Church workers into the government payroll system.
The Governor General expressed his belief that the Pope’s visit would have a lasting impact on the spiritual wellbeing of the people of Papua New Guinea. He humbly asked for the Pope’s prayers for the country’s leaders and citizens to strengthen their faith in the face of global challenges.
