Welcome to Vanimo: Pope Francis Encourages Missionary Work in Papua New Guinea
By Devin Watkins
The coastal city of Vanimo in Papua New Guinea welcomed a special guest as Pope Francis arrived to speak to the Catholic community and commend their missionary efforts. After a brief two-hour flight on an Australian C-130 military transport plane, the Pope expressed his gratitude for the dedication of local Catholics in spreading the Gospel in the area.
Addressing the gathering in front of the Holy Cross Pro-Cathedral, Pope Francis recognized the commitment of missionary priests and religious sisters who have been evangelizing the region since the mid-19th century. He also praised the modern-day missionaries who continue to travel far and wide to bring the message of Christ to remote communities.
Embracing Beauty and Love
Pope Francis highlighted the beauty of Papua New Guinea’s landscape and the richness of its biodiversity, emphasizing that God has entrusted this beauty to the people there for the benefit of all. He encouraged the faithful to examine the beauty that grows within them when they exhibit love towards one another, stressing the importance of spreading the Gospel through acts of kindness and compassion.
Promoting Christian Values
The Pontiff reminded Catholics that missionary work can begin in their own communities, urging everyone to be missionaries in their daily lives. He emphasized the power of love to overcome divisions and destructive behaviors such as violence, infidelity, and substance abuse. Quoting the example of Blessed Peter To Rot, a martyr of Papua New Guinea, Pope Francis encouraged the faithful to defend the unity of the family and to uphold acts of charity and love as the country’s greatest treasure.
As the visit to Vanimo came to a close, Pope Francis addressed the children present, praising their joyful and infectious spirits as a symbol of hope and positivity. He encouraged them to continue spreading love and happiness wherever they go, leaving a lasting impression on visitors and in the hearts of those they encounter.
