Get Ready: Rome Bus, Tram, and Subway Ticket Prices Set to Increase!
Exciting times are ahead in Rome as Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has confirmed that the cost of traveling on the city’s local public transport network is due to rise. Described as a “painful necessity,” the price hike is aimed at securing funds to renew the service contract with municipal public transport company ATAC. With a need for €22 million, the increase in ticket prices seems inevitable.
While the new pricing plan was expected to be implemented last July, it has been delayed until now. Under this plan, the 100-minute ticket will increase to €2 from €1.50, the daily ticket to €9.30 from €7, and the two-day ticket to €16.70 from €12.50. The changes continue with the 72-hour ticket rising to €24, the weekly ticket to €32, and a discount on the yearly pass dropping to €240.
These fare hikes reflect the growing demand for public transport in Rome, particularly with the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025 that is expected to draw millions of pilgrims and tourists to the city. To accommodate this influx, the city has even issued a tender for 1,000 new taxi licenses, addressing a long-standing shortage of cabs in Rome.
However, before these changes take effect, Rome is facing an eight-hour public transport strike on Monday, September 9th. Despite this setback, the city is moving forward with its plans to enhance its transportation network and prepare for the exciting times ahead.
