On his visit to Timor-Leste, the Pope will delve into the heart of this predominantly Catholic country in Southeast Asia, situated on half of the island of Timor. Surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and led by individuals who fought for its independence, Timor-Leste stands as one of the world’s youngest nations.
Adriano Remiddi from the Global Campus of Human Rights revealed that Timor-Leste was the first nation to officially adopt Pope Francis’ 2019 Document on Human Fraternity, incorporating it into the school curriculum to promote interfaith harmony and peace.
President José Ramos-Horta played a pivotal role in passing a resolution endorsing the Document, affirming its importance in teaching children tolerance across various facets of society.
Discussing Timor-Leste’s journey since gaining independence in 2002 after a tumultuous period under Indonesian occupation and a pro-independence struggle, Remiddi highlighted the country’s commitment to justice, human rights, and sustainability. Organizations like the Global Campus of Human Rights have aided in Timor-Leste’s progress.
Remiddi emphasized the significance of human rights education in post-conflict and transitional societies, underscoring the EU-backed efforts to bolster Timor-Leste’s National University for growth.
In a remarkable development, Timor-Leste has redefined itself as a paragon of human rights and democracy within a short span since its independence, distinguishing it from other young nations like Kosovo and South Sudan.
Notably, the Catholic Church has played a pivotal role in Timor-Leste’s social and educational advancement. Missionaries, particularly the Salesians, have enriched the nation’s education, nurturing potential leaders for the future.
Pope Francis’ impending visit is anticipated to be a historic occasion for Timor-Leste, viewed as a transformative event and a testament to the nation’s vibrant Catholic culture.
This visit holds the promise of encouraging global recognition and support for Timor-Leste’s accomplishments, drawing attention to its progress and challenges.
As Timor-Leste transitions to a future focused on sustainability and human rights, the visit is poised to illuminate the nation’s journey and inspire further growth in the realms of democracy and social cohesion.
