Is Europe willing to be the master of its own destiny or not? Should we face the issues of Chinese expansionism, Russian aggression, or what will happen in the United States with autonomy, independence, and sovereignty, or with dependence and servitude at some point? The “Competitiveness Report on the EU” seeks to provide an answer to what needs to be done to be independent, and to achieve that, there must first be a shared community perspective on what needs to be done in foreign policy and defense. This was stated by former Prime Minister Mario Draghi, a guest in Milan at the Tempo delle Donne event organized by Corriere della Sera.
“I am aware that it will take a long time. Looking at the situation of the various governments in Europe, I find it quite discouraging because they are all very weak,” which makes it “difficult” to make “major decisions”. However, “it is important to arrive at a common vision for all 27,” emphasized the former President of the ECB, citing the recommendation in his report to move past the unanimity criterion and use “strengthened cooperation” or “intergovernmental arrangements as have been done in fiscal matters” when necessary.
“We are last in terms of female employment, fertility, but the Italian Constitution protects equality of status. I ask myself: do people who pay women less than men know they are going against the Italian Constitution?” Mario Draghi said at the Corriere della Sera event. According to Draghi, to improve, “persistence is needed.” “Creating equal conditions cannot be achieved by decree but by building a conducive environment.”
