Say Goodbye to Rome’s Trams: Buses Take Over During Porta Maggiore Renovation
Rome is undergoing a transformation as all trams are being temporarily replaced by buses from 16 September to 3 November due to the final phase of works at the Porta Maggiore tram depot. This necessary change is part of the city’s efforts to accommodate new 33-metre trams, with the aim of having all tram lines back in operation by 2 December.
The renovation project at the Porta Maggiore depot is crucial for improving the overall tram service, following extensive infrastructure upgrades across Rome. The goal is to enhance the public transport system in anticipation of the Vatican’s Jubilee Year 2025.
ATAC, the municipal public transport company, expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to commuters and stated, “We are redeveloping the Porta Maggiore depot to accommodate the fleet of new trams and improve the service, thanks to the completion of the renovation work on the entire network.”
During this period, tram lines 2, 3, 5, and 14 will be replaced by buses, with line 19 suspended in certain sections and served by buses on alternative routes. The city’s transport councillor, Eugenio Patanè, emphasized the importance of these works for restoring full efficiency to the public transport system.
Rome’s public transport network has been undergoing significant upgrades to prepare for the expected influx of tourists and pilgrims during Jubilee 2025. The temporary shift to buses at Porta Maggiore is part of these ongoing improvements.
