Welcome Bishop Dejene Hidoto: A New Chapter Begins in Soddo, Ethiopia
The Episcopal consecration of Bishop-elect Dejene Hidoto for the Vicariate of Soddo in Ethiopia was a momentous occasion that took place on 15th September 2024. This historic event followed his appointment by Pope Francis in July. The grand ceremony unfolded at the magnificent Holy Trinity Catholic Cathedral in Soddo, southern Ethiopia, ushering in a new era for the community.

The welcoming festivities commenced as Bishop-elect Dejene made his gracious entrance after his spiritual preparation at the Tikur Weha Retreat Center near Hawassa, Ethiopia. The city Mayor, distinguished Bishops, local government officials, and honored guests from far and wide graced the auspicious occasion with their presence.
A Rainy Yet Joyful Welcome
Despite the downpour on the eve of 14th September, the exuberant youth and Police march band sang and welcomed Bishop-elect Dejene and guests from all corners of Ethiopia, adding an unforgettable charm to the event. The local community embraced them with a traditional “grass and oil” ceremony, symbolizing deep respect for their esteemed visitors.
Thousands Gather in Celebration
On 15th September, Cardinal Abune Berhaneyesus, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia, led the Holy Mass and the consecration ceremony. The unprecedented gathering saw the presence of all Bishops except for the former Bishop of Soddo and Bishop of Adigrat. Over 250 priests, representatives of various faiths, and a multitude of faithful believers congregated to witness this historic moment.
Reading the official letter from Pope Francis, Monsignor Massimo Catterin confirmed the episcopal appointment and the formal transfer of leadership for the Vicariate. Cardinal Abune Berhaneyesus, in his homily, warmly welcomed the new Bishop, urging unwavering support through prayer and dedicated service. He exhorted Bishop-elect Dejene to be a faithful guardian of the Church, serving with wholehearted devotion, love for the poor, and attentiveness to the faithful.
Former Bishop Tsegaye and Bishop Seyoum, along with government officials, international Capuchin Friars Provincial, and faithful representatives shared messages of solidarity and support for the new Bishop’s journey ahead.
Unity Through Support and Prayer
In his closing remarks, Bishop-elect Dejene shared his motto, “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5), highlighting his dedication to following the guidance of Holy Mary’s words. He expressed his commitment to serving the Church, particularly in the realm of liturgical celebrations in Ethiopia, with a focus on the Latin rite.
Gratefully acknowledging the esteemed clergy, guests, and fellow Catholics, Bishop Dejene called for unified support and prayers. He impassioned the laity and youth, urging them to uphold and cherish the faith inherited from their ancestors, despite the challenges of the world.
