During his Apostolic Journey to Belgium from September 26-29, Pope Francis is engaging with various sectors of Belgian society, including humanitarian organizations like Caritas Belgium.
In a conversation with Joseph Tulloch from Vatican News in Brussels, Gilles Cnockaert, Head of Communications and Mobilization at Caritas Belgium, underlined the organization’s dedication to crisis response and poverty alleviation as central pillars of their community service.
Caritas Belgium is committed to offering sustainable solutions for individuals impacted by humanitarian disasters, with a specific focus on migrants and their integration into host communities. Their programs also address the needs of vulnerable groups, such as women and children, in collaboration with the global Caritas network.
Mr. Cnockaert highlighted Caritas Belgium’s immediate response to escalating violence in regions like the Middle East, prioritizing urgent humanitarian assistance for those in crisis.
Upholding Belgian Hospitality
The main theme of Pope Francis’ visit to Belgium centers around migration, a topic where Caritas Belgium continues its tradition of hospitality despite the country’s cautious approach to migrant reception.
Mr. Cnockaert praised Belgian individuals who embrace migrants with open arms, emphasizing Caritas’ stance against restrictive policies. With over 4,000 people seeking international protection, the efforts of parishes and reception groups remain crucial in supporting and integrating migrants within the community.
As the Pope’s visit coincides with International Migrants Day, Mr. Cnockaert sees it as a beacon of hope amid challenging circumstances.
Expectations for the Papal Visit
Amidst challenges faced by the Church in Belgium, including the impact of sexual abuse scandals, Mr. Cnockaert anticipates concrete attention to be given to the victims during the papal visit.
Ten residents from Caritas reception centers are set to attend the Mass at Heysel with the Holy Father, with children presenting souvenirs to Pope Francis—a symbol of their warm welcome and appreciation.
Caritas Belgium’s mission aligns with the Catholic Church’s promotion of solidarity and human dignity, advocating for social and environmental justice through practical action and international collaboration.
Mr. Cnockaert concludes by affirming that, with the support of compassionate individuals, the Church’s mission will persist in championing vital causes for a more just and sustainable world.
