Cinema and arts for everyone. Only accessible culture is true culture
Inclusion and accessibility take center stage at the tenth edition of the Women in Cinema Award (WiCA), created by Angela Prudenzi, Cristina Scognamillo, and Claudia Conte. The award aims to celebrate and honor female talent in the film industry and related arts. The recipients represent different cultures and storytelling styles, with a special focus on those engaged in significant social activities.
This year, the award goes to Maria Chiara Giannetta for her compelling performances, especially in bringing the young character Blanca to life. With sensitivity, she portrayed a character highlighting the subtle differences between individuals with disabilities and those considered “normal”. It acknowledges her undeniable artistic talent and passion for portraying non-stereotypical female figures on screen, offering contemporary role models.
Roberta Torre receives the WiCA for her unique and expressionistic work, characterized by a distinctive aesthetic freedom. Her creations, born of original creativity, consistently feature modern female figures free from conventional norms and advocates for individual rights. A filmmaker always standing by the women she portrays, depicting unexplored aspects and non-stereotypical psychologies.
A special recognition goes to Francesco Costabile for the originality of his creative journey, even in its early stages, and the unique expressive choices evident in his films. The award also acknowledges his attention to women, showcasing the various forms of violence they may face, whether oppressed by dominant husbands or subjected to criminal laws that permanently shape their lives.
In honor of her writing prowess, the WiCA is presented to Lia Levi, whose novels serve as an endless source of ideas and foster reflection on recent history. Through her story and consistent commitment, she embodies an intellectual model of deep knowledge dedicated to inspiring consciousness, particularly in younger generations, encouraging them to find their place in the world based on honesty, courage, and respect.
The WiCA is also awarded to Annamaria Granatello, President, and Director of the Solinas Prize, for her decade-long work in promoting talent in film, documentaries, and series writing. With dedication and passion, she has engaged authors, producers, and critics, keeping alive the memory of the great screenwriter Franco Solinas.
A special acknowledgment is reserved for young athlete, swimmer Monica Boggioni, a symbol of strength and resilience. Her story and constant dedication serve as a positive role model for athletes and peers, inspiring those confronting challenges at a young age.
Lastly, the “Una Nessuna Centomila” Foundation receives the WiCA for its social endeavors, honoring its tireless work in preventing and combating violence against women, using the universal language of cinema and arts. For its rigor and demonstrated passion, the association has become a reference point for issues related to gender-based violence and equity.
