Pope Francis Calls for Global Leaders to Prioritize Inclusion and Disability at G7 Summit

During the recent G7 Inclusion and Disability Summit, Pope Francis delivered a powerful message urging world leaders to focus on the dignity, inclusion, and empowerment of individuals with disabilities. He emphasized the importance of justice, universal accessibility, and solidarity in creating a more inclusive society.

    By Francesca Merlo

Speaking to Ministers attending the summit at the Vatican on 17 October, Pope Francis expressed deep appreciation for their dedication to building a fairer and more inclusive world. The summit followed a three-day event in Italy’s Umbria region, where the Solfagnano Charter was signed, outlining eight priorities to ensure the full participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of life.

Pope Francis highlighted the principles of the charter as fundamental to the Church’s vision of human dignity and essential for building a society that values every individual as part of the universal human family.

In his address, the Pope urged the international community to make the inclusion of people with disabilities a top priority, stressing that their equal dignity should be universally recognized. He emphasized the need for universal accessibility, removing physical, social, cultural, and religious barriers to allow individuals to develop their talents and contribute to the common good.

    A Call for Justice

Pope Francis emphasized that providing services and facilities for individuals with disabilities is not merely an act of kindness but a matter of justice. He called on all nations to create inclusive communities that support the full development of every person, offering opportunities for dignified employment and participation in cultural and sporting events.

Technology as a Tool for Inclusion

The Pope also underlined the role of technology in advancing inclusion, emphasizing the importance of making it accessible to all. However, he cautioned that technology must be used wisely to bridge inequalities rather than deepen them, advocating for its use in promoting a culture of encounter and solidarity.

    Addressing Times of Crisis

As he concluded his address, Pope Francis drew attention to the urgent humanitarian crises that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including those with disabilities. He called for a comprehensive system of prevention and emergency response tailored to the specific needs of individuals with disabilities to ensure that they are not left behind in times of conflict or natural disasters.

Inspired by the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, Pope Francis encouraged G7 participants to continue their work with hope and commitment to building a world where the dignity of every person is fully recognized and respected.
