Welcome to our blog where we delve into a recent clarification by the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith regarding his absence from a Synod meeting on October 18. In an address to the Synod Assembly, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez explained his absence from the previous week’s meeting on the topic of female diaconate, citing a medical procedure undergone by a colleague responsible for coordinating the group.
Despite some press speculation about his absence reflecting a lack of interest, the Cardinal clarified the situation as a misunderstanding and pledged to be present at the upcoming meeting on October 24 to discuss the group’s work and address concerns raised by participants.
A Delicate Issue
Cardinal Fernandez revealed that Pope Francis has indicated the question of the female diaconate is not yet mature for discussion. Despite partial conclusions from the study commission, chaired by Cardinal Giuseppe Petrocchi, the results will be made public at the appropriate time. The Pope has emphasized enhancing women’s roles within the Church beyond the Sacrament of Ordination.
A Broader Vision for Women’s Leadership
Highlighting the need for a more inclusive approach, Cardinal Fernandez argued that focusing solely on the female diaconate would not address the wider issue affecting women in the Church. With examples like the ministry of the catechist and acolyte, he stressed the importance of exploring diverse avenues for women’s leadership roles.
Cardinal Fernandez urged synod members, particularly women, to share their stories and proposals for promoting women’s leadership in the Church. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and affirming women’s contributions to Church life based on reality rather than abstract ideas.
A Step-by-Step Approach
In closing, Cardinal Fernandez expressed optimism about making progress in promoting women’s leadership roles through gradual steps within the Church. He affirmed that women are capable of holding significant positions in the Church, and the unstoppable work of the Holy Spirit will guide this journey.
