Welcome to the Future of Transportation in Rome with the Togliatti Tram
Rome is set to embark on a new era of public transportation with the inauguration of the Togliatti Tram, a cutting-edge project that will revolutionize the way residents and visitors navigate the city’s eastern suburbs.
With an investment of €184 million from Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan PNRR funds, the 8-km tram line will run along Viale Palmiro Togliatti, seamlessly connecting Rome’s three subway lines and the FL2 railway line.
Set to be completed by June 2026, the Togliatti Tram will provide a vital link to the Metro B at Ponte Mammolo, Metro A at Subaugusta, and Metro C at Centocelle, catering to an estimated 42,000 passengers daily with a four-minute frequency during peak hours.
Rome Mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, hailed the project as “historic and extraordinarily important,” emphasizing that it will bring much-needed improvement to non-central areas, enhancing accessibility and convenience for residents and visitors alike.
As part of the city’s commitment to enhancing its public transportation network, ongoing works at the Porta Maggiore tram depot are set to upgrade infrastructure to accommodate new 33-meter trams, ensuring the seamless operation of all tram lines by early December.
The ambitious renewal of Rome’s tram system comes ahead of the Vatican’s Jubilee Year 2025, a significant event that is expected to bring millions of tourists and pilgrims to the Eternal City.
