Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit

Homily of Cardinal Mario Grech
Secretary General of the Synod
Dear brothers and sisters,
As we near the conclusion of our Synodal Assembly, which began back in October 2021, we are reminded of the importance of “gathering” as emphasized by Jesus in the Gospel passage. Jesus warns against greed and covetousness, pointing out that hoarding possessions can lead to division rather than communion.
In a parable shared by Jesus, we see a rich man faced with a bountiful harvest, contemplating how to store his crops. Similarly, as we reflect on the fruits of our synodal journey, we must consider how to handle the abundance we have discovered. Are we merely content to hoard these gifts, or are we open to sharing and multiplying them further?
While the man in the parable chooses to build bigger storehouses for himself, we are encouraged to look beyond mere accumulation and seek ways to invest and share our blessings with the Church and the world. As we strive to avoid living off our earnings, we must be vigilant against the temptation of avarice and instead, be guided by the Holy Spirit.
By embracing the Holy Spirit, we open ourselves to God’s newness and wisdom, allowing us to continue on the synodal path with hope and a sense of purpose. As we listen to the Spirit’s voice, we are called to move forward with faith, knowing that this assembly serves as a new beginning rather than a final destination.
Together with Mary, let us tune our hearts to the whispers of the Holy Spirit and rejoice in the salvation that awaits us. May we, as pilgrims of hope, advance on the synodal journey, spreading the Word of God and glorifying His name.
