Amos Hochstein, the special envoy appointed by President Biden, is currently in Beirut, working tirelessly with all parties involved to establish a formula that will pave the way for lasting peace in the region. The conflict, which has been escalating over the past four weeks, has already claimed the lives of approximately 2,500 people in Lebanon.
Despite his earlier efforts in Lebanon, Hochstein was unable to prevent the conflict from intensifying, resulting in devastating consequences for the country.
Recently, Israel conducted air strikes targeting branches of a bank used by Hezbollah in Lebanon. Additionally, the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon reported the destruction of one of its positions by an Israeli bulldozer, signaling a series of escalating incidents following a call for UNIFIL’s troops to withdraw.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, is set to embark on a visit to the Middle East today to push for a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate discussions on planning for a post-conflict period.
The United Nations has also raised concerns about Israel’s actions in northern Gaza, citing forced displacement as a result of ongoing tensions.
