The Success Story of Radio Kabangabanga: A Decade of Community Service
The Catholic Diocese of Solwezi, under the leadership of Bishop Charles J.S. Kasonde, recently celebrated a significant milestone – the 10th anniversary of Radio Kabangabanga. This community radio station, located in Zambia’s North Western Province, has become a beacon of hope and a voice for the local community.
During a live broadcast on Saturday, 12th October 2024, Bishop Kasonde commended the people of the province for their unwavering support of the radio station. He expressed his gratitude to the Catholic Christians and people of goodwill for embracing the station’s mission of spreading the Good News, promoting integral human development, and providing essential information to the community.
A Radio Station with a Purpose
Named ‘Kabangabanga’, meaning ‘star’ in the local KiKaonde language, the radio station was envisioned to shine brightly in the province. Bishop Kasonde emphasized the importance of community-oriented programs that fostered unity and relationships among the residents.
As Radio Kabangabanga marked its 10th anniversary, Bishop Kasonde reminded the listeners of their shared history and encouraged them to look towards a future filled with hope and prosperity.

Father Paul Samasumo, a Vatican Radio representative and current SIGNIS World Vice President, lauded the station for its commitment to broadcasting Vatican Radio’s English Africa news program. He highlighted the enduring relevance of radio in Africa and its role in disseminating vital information to the masses.
During the anniversary celebrations, Station Manager Fr. Christopher Sawila expressed gratitude to Bishop Kasonde for his continued support. He acknowledged the radio station’s role in promoting the Gospel and serving the community.
Radio Kabangabanga was officially blessed in 2014 by Bishop Kasonde, with a commissioning ceremony graced by local dignitaries and religious leaders. The station has since become a vital source of news and entertainment for the people of Solwezi Diocese and North Western Province.
