Bishop Paskalis Bruno Syukur, a 62-year-old Indonesian Franciscan, was appointed by Pope Francis on November 21, 2013. Previously, he served as the Provincial of the Order of Friars Minor in Indonesia from 2001 to 2009. His decision to forego becoming a cardinal stems from a deep desire to continue his personal growth in service to the Church and the people of God, as stated by the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni.
This choice means that the number of cardinals receiving the red hat from the Holy Father will now be 20 instead of the originally planned 21.
