The Holy See Calls for Ratification of Nuclear Treaties to Protect Civilian Safety
Amid the ongoing conflict surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN in New York, has raised concerns about the significant risk of an uncontrolled release of ionizing radiation. In a recent address to the United Nations General Assembly, Archbishop Caccia emphasized the importance of ratifying key treaties to protect civilian safety and health.
Archbishop Caccia urged the ratification of both the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) to mitigate the risks associated with radiation exposure. He highlighted the role of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) in raising awareness about the effects and risks of radiation, calling for stronger global efforts to protect safety and health.
Prioritizing Research and Implementation
As the use of nuclear technology increases, Archbishop Caccia stressed the need for states to prioritize policies that consider the negative health and environmental consequences. He expressed support for the Committee’s work program focusing on various health-related concerns, including the effects of ionizing radiation on the body’s systems.
Protecting the Vulnerable
Archbishop Caccia also highlighted the harmful effects of ionizing radiation on vulnerable populations, such as women, children, the unborn, and indigenous peoples. He expressed alarm over the potential risks of an uncontrolled release of radiation at nuclear facilities in conflict zones, emphasizing the need for urgent action to safeguard populations and the environment.
Urgent Action Needed
The Holy See reiterated its appeal for the ratification of key treaties to prevent and reduce harmful radiation exposure and protect innocent victims. Archbishop Caccia emphasized the essential role of these treaties in safeguarding the environment and prioritizing the safety of individuals and future generations.
