In a letter addressed to Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of interpreting Latin in today’s world.
He emphasized that Latin is not just a language, but a key to the classic texts that have influenced our society. Latin represents the roots of Western civilization and our very identity.
“Latin is a treasure of knowledge and thought, a key to accessing the classic texts that have shaped our world.”
The Pope commended the awardees for their research in showing how Latin can still be relevant and thought-provoking in modern times. Their work integrates the wisdom of the past with the challenges of the present, creating a dialogue between science, culture, and politics.
He called on everyone to see Latin not just as an academic pursuit but as a tool for fostering harmony and promoting human dignity. The Pope expressed hope that the awardees’ passion will inspire others to engage in similar endeavors.
