The major events of the Jubilee in the new Piazza Pia, just a few steps from St. Peter’s Square, and no longer at Centocelle Park. For now, it’s just a hypothesis, but it’s gaining strong momentum during coordination meetings on the Holy Year. The initial schedule drafted in recent months included nine events in the suburbs, from February to May 2025, in the renovated green space designed to host the jubilee gatherings.
Speaking at the Capitolina Jubilee Commission meeting held this morning, the Environment Councilor, Sabrina Alfonsi, stated that regarding Centocelle Park, work is progressing according to schedule and the designated spaces will be ready by the beginning of the new year. If there are events, work to create, for example, a large playground, will pause for the necessary time to accommodate pilgrims and resume later. If the events do not take place at Centocelle, the construction sites can continue without interruption.
Regarding the possibility of moving everything to the new Piazza Pia, centrally located and just a few meters from Via della Conciliazione and St. Peter’s Square, Alfonsi stated: “It is not up to me to respond at the Jubilee table, as I am at the Commission as the Environment Councilor. On this specific topic, the question should not be directed to me, but what I can say is: if there are events, we are prepared, and if there are no events, we will be faster on things that the Jubilee would have slowed down. I think it would have been an opportunity for Centocelle Park, as I reiterate, but I believe this issue should be raised at the Jubilee table, with the mayor and all those who make these decisions along with the Government and the Vatican.”
Jubilee 2025, construction sites in Rome and completion dates: what will be ready and what will not by 2024
This response from the councilor did not convince Maurizio Politi, a Lega councilor and vice president of the special Jubilee 2025 commission: “It is evident that the jubilee events should be spread throughout the city and not just in central areas. The Jubilee is a gigantic opportunity, but the entire city must be able to seize it.”
“We learn with concern – Politi declared – that in the latest coordination meeting between the Government, Mayor, and the Holy See, there was a desire to move the events planned within Centocelle Park to the area of Piazza Pia. Certainly, a site suitable for hosting large events, but once again excluding the more peripheral areas.”
