Why Is It Called St. Paul Outside The Walls?

The name stems from the fact that the original basilica was constructed over the tomb of Saint Paul in 313 AD and consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 330 AD. Due to increasing pilgrim visits, a new basilica was erected in 390 AD, becoming the largest in Rome at the time.

However, the basilica’s history is marked by turmoil. Being situated “outside the walls,” beyond the Aurelian Walls, it suffered damage from a Saracen raid in the 9th century. The Pope fortified the area, forming the town of Johannispolis, which was later destroyed by an earthquake in 1348.

In 1823, a fire caused by a worker repairing the roof gutters nearly destroyed the basilica, prompting Pope Leo XII to order its exact reconstruction to preserve its original character.
