Have you ever seen the viral videos on social media of a man walking the streets of Rome with a chihuahua and a white donkey? Crazy, right? Not at all. Who is this man really?
The man in question is Brice Di Dio, a French pilgrim who set out on July 9, 2023 from Puy en Velay with the goal of reaching Compostela, passing through Jerusalem and Rome, where he arrived yesterday on November 30th.
He left everything behind, his financial ties, like his apartment, to embark on this new journey with great faith in both the Providence of God and the path he is on, as well as the many encounters he has had along the way. All this after speaking with several French embassies, evaluating the pros and cons of such a project, and reflecting on the risks due to the geopolitical situations of some countries he passed through.
To reach the Capital, the pilgrim crossed the Via Francigena, and just yesterday, Saturday, November 30th, he arrived in Rome. From the stories uploaded this morning by Brice, he showed that he had arrived at the Vatican.
Next stop Compostela, passing back through the Via Francigena and then the Via di Arles and the Camino Francès.
Rome Daily News managed to interview Brice Di Dio:
What motivated you to set out on this journey?
“The primary motivation that drove me to embark on this journey was the encounter with the love of Jesus Christ. I realized that Christ loved me, I felt deeply touched in my heart by this love that completely changed my life. Yes, for me, Christ is truly alive and lives in me! Yet I remain a man, marked by sin, marked by my past, I have never killed anyone but I am not without mistakes, without faults. I have had dark moments in my life. I have seen the radical nature of the evil that I could do and that could be within me. Despite this, Jesus loved me and called me to Himself.
When you encounter such great love in your life, which comes to illuminate your hearts, to bring you joy and peace, which loves you completely and truly and knows you personally. The Gospel says that He knows each of us and calls us by name. I felt called to follow Him radically. To radically give my life to Him.
It was therefore the encounter with the Love of Jesus that prompted me to embark on this journey, first and foremost to live the Gospel myself, to convert more and more every day, I responded to an inner call expressed in the Gospel: “Sell everything you have and follow me”, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all nations.”
And Saint Anthony, a great Franciscan saint, said: “Let your actions speak instead of your words.” My goal is this: to testify that God truly loves each one of us. And to testify through my life that is meant to be radically turned towards Christ. When you know you are loved by Jesus, you just want to tell everyone about this fabulous encounter you had that changed your life! So my motivation is to continue to draw closer to God, to seek Him every day, to live the Gospel that I announce, to proclaim it and to testify to it to all I meet.”
Did you face any difficulties during the journey? If so, what were they?
“Yes, I had some difficulties during these 2 years of travel, first and foremost being accommodation. One might think it was the donkey that gave me trouble: it was actually the dog. Many places do not accept dogs even if they are small. Sometimes it is difficult. As for difficulties, I could say that I fell on the trail in Greece which broke my nose and I have a scar. Death threats received when I was in Albania from people who thought I was a Zionist because I was going to Israel. Fortunately, the Albanian police were very good to me. I must admit otherwise that I did not have major difficulties, in fact, as soon as there were any, I received so much grace from God and from people to help me that in the end everything went well. In the Psalms, God says: “I will guard you when you go and when you return.” And truly I can testify in my journey the presence and protection of God!”
Why did you choose to bring the dog and the donkey?
“I have always loved animals.
Cosa ti aspetta una volta arrivato a Compostela?
Partirò presto verso Monte Sant’Angelo, per poi risalire la costa fino ad Ancona e Trieste. Da lì, deciderò se è il momento di intraprendere il viaggio verso Gerusalemme, passando per i Balcani: Slovenia, Croazia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Grecia, Turchia e Cipro, oppure se invece optare per Santiago di Compostela.
Il mio attuale stile di vita consiste nel vagabondare per le strade seguendo le orme di Cristo. Per me, non è tanto la meta che conta, ma il cammino e le persone che incontro lungo la strada. Dopo due anni, mi sento molto stanco e vorrei trovare un luogo, come un eremo, che possa ospitarmi insieme a Stitch ed Esperance per qualche settimana o mese. Mi affido alla Provvidenza divina, agli incontri che faccio, alle mie preghiere e ai miei passi.”
Per capire meglio, dopo essere tornato a Izmir, hai ripassato per casa (in Francia) seguendo la via Francigena?
Dove hai alloggiato? Sei stato ospite di monasteri?
“Ho dormito principalmente in parrocchie, monasteri, conventi e a volte anche in alloggi messi a disposizione dai municipi. Durante l’estate e in condizioni climatiche favorevoli, riesco a dormire all’aperto con il mio asino grazie a un’amaca che porto con me. In inverno e con le temperature rigide, questa opzione non è più possibile. Sono stato accolto anche da logge di pellegrini, famiglie e persone che mi seguono e mi incontrano lungo il percorso e che vogliono aiutarmi. Un pellegrino si adatta facilmente. All’inizio cercavo solo un letto e una doccia, ora mi accontento di una stanza dove posso mettere il materasso a terra e avere un punto d’acqua. Ringrazio Dio per tutto ciò che ricevo lungo il mio viaggio, che a volte include alloggi gratuiti in residenze lussuose o in posti più modesti come magazzini, garage o uffici. Quando arriva la sera, la stanchezza prevale e riesco a dormire tranquillamente, soprattutto grazie alla presenza vigile di Stitch, il mio fedele compagno.”
Sei partito senza nulla (soldi, ricchezze, risorse), come sei riuscito ad adattarti?
“All’inizio del mio viaggio, partii praticamente senza nulla, seguendo la tradizione francescana di viaggiare senza soldi e senza cercare l’arricchimento personale. Tuttavia, lungo il cammino, ho ricevuto aiuto da coloro che mi seguono online, creando un fondo per coprire spese specifiche come attrezzature, cure veterinarie e mediche. Le donazioni spontanee ricevute durante il cammino mi permettono di contribuire alle spese di alloggio, acquistare cibo extra e aiutare chi ha bisogno. La mia situazione rimane precaria, ma la generosità delle persone che incontro lungo il percorso mi aiuta a superare le difficoltà.”
Il Messaggio di Brie: Pellegrinaggio e Riflessione
Quindi per il resto dipendo dalla Provvidenza, busso alle porte per chiedere cibo, prego il Signore che mi dia ciò di cui ho bisogno.
Quale messaggio vuoi mandare alle persone attraverso il tuo viaggio?
“Il messaggio che voglio inviare alle persone che mi incontrano è che Gesù le ama, sono veramente amate da Dio, e che noi tutti siamo, come dice San Pietro: “Pellegrini e viandanti sulla terra”, vorrei che le persone si interrogassero e si ponessero domande sul senso della propria vita, dalla sua origine alla sua fine. Da dove veniamo? Dove stiamo andando? Qual è il significato di ciò che sta accadendo tra i due? La risposta che voglio dare loro è Cristo e voglio testimoniare la verità di questa risposta.
Credo che i pellegrini siano segno di contraddizione in questo mondo dove tutto va così veloce, dove il consumo eccessivo, l’iperattività, la sovrapproduzione portano molte persone ad andare verso cose superficiali, a mettere tutte le loro energie, il loro tempo e la loro vita per costruire l’inutilità. Molte persone vivono una vita banale.
Attraverso i nostri cammini di pellegrinaggio, il mio e quello di tanti altri pellegrini, vogliamo ricordare e far ricordare al mondo l’essenziale: il nostro cuore, la nostra umanità, i legami umani.
Nella sua ultima enciclica “Dilexit Nos” Papa Francesco ha detto di non accontentarci di una vita materiale, superficiale, piena fuori ma completamente vuota dentro. Voglio dire ancora al mondo: “non lasciatevi rubare la vita, la gioia, la pace, la speranza”. La vita è troppo bella per rinunciarvi, la vita eterna troppo preziosa per rinunciarvi. Vorrei che tutti ritrovassimo l’attenzione gli uni per gli altri, che prestassimo attenzione ai più piccoli, ai più fragili, ai più abbandonati e ai più disprezzati. Lo so, quello che sogno è un mondo un po’ idealistico, ma è il mondo del VANGELO! Questo è il mondo che Dio voleva creare! questo è il mondo per cui voglio lottare e che voglio costruire. Un mondo più giusto, più umano, più fraterno, più vicino al Cuore.”
