Harvey Weinstein, awaiting yet another trial for sexual harassment in Rikers Island prison, has been hospitalized again at Bellevue Hospital in New York for “urgent treatment due to alarming blood test results that require immediate medical care.” This was stated in a note by his lawyer Imran Ansari, as reported by ABC News. “He will remain there until his condition stabilizes,” the lawyer said.
The former Miramax boss was diagnosed with a rare form of spinal cancer last October, adding to his numerous other health issues at the age of 72, including diabetes. In September, Weinstein underwent heart surgery. That same month, he was again indicted in New York for assaulting a woman in a Manhattan hotel in 2006. The new indictment followed the overturning of his initial 23-year sentence due to a procedural error by the trial judge. Nevertheless, the former producer remained in prison, having also been sentenced to 16 years in Los Angeles for sexual offenses.
The allegations against Weinstein came to light in October 2017 when around eighty women – including well-known figures like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd, and Asia Argento – came forward, sparking the #MeToo movement.
Weinstein, who co-founded Miramax with his brother Bob in 1979, has always maintained that the sexual encounters with his victims were consensual. His lawyers have filed a lawsuit against the city of New York and its prison department, accusing them of negligence and failure to provide adequate care.
