Imagine Donald Trump pointing to his people gathered at the West Palm Beach headquarters in Florida, symbolically handing them the victory in the race for the presidency of the United States. This is the opening image of the book Photoansa 2024, which narrates the main events of the ending year through the photos of the press agency.

There is suffering and destruction caused by wars, from Gaza to Ukraine, which have become part of our daily lives and seem to push farther away the dream of peace pursued since the post-war period.
There is Europe at the polls, divided, lost, struggling to reassert its role in the global scenario. Our cities, like Valencia, seem unable to withstand the impact of a changing climate anymore.
Some of these images were projected at the Maxxi, where the presentation of the book took place with the agency’s executives – President Giulio Anselmi, CEO Stefano De Alessandri, and Director Luigi Contu – along with representatives from the world of politics, science, sports, and entertainment.
Starting with the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, who spoke about Italy’s role in the new international context, emphasizing that reaching 2% of defense spending on GDP ‘is not a political choice, but an obligation’.

Nobel Prize in Physics Giorgio Parisi, in a video interview broadcast during the event, expressed concern about climate change, urging governments to do more.
Among the images in the book and shown during the event are those of the Olympic Games, revealing the determination, disappointment, and joy of the athletes competing in Paris. Martina Caironi and Giacomo Perini, two of the main representatives of Italian Paralympic movement, recounted them. ‘Reality is not inclusive – said the former – Milano-Cortina is an opportunity to take a step forward and bring disabled athletes from around the world to Italy’.
There is also a tribute to the 70 years of TV, from Indietro Tutta to Ballando con le Stelle. Renzo Arbore spoke about it, recalling some of his historic programs, on radio and TV, pointing out that it is challenging to find shows in today’s television that make people laugh like those in the past. He announced that starting from January 9, a program he co-created with Gegè Telesforo titled ‘Come ridevamo’ will air every Thursday night on Rai2. He also mentioned some of the talents he has launched, including Milly Carlucci, who in a video greeting wished everyone a 2025 full of good news.
For the twentieth edition, the collection also features some iconic shots from the first part of the millennium: from Aylan Kurdi, the child washed ashore on a Turkish beach, symbolizing the thousands of deaths in the Mediterranean, to the lightning striking the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica on the day of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation, to the Costa Concordia ship sinking off Giglio.
Photoansa 2024 will be presented on Wednesday at 5 pm at Palazzo Lombardia in Milan, also live streaming on ANSA.it.
