    Un preoccupante trend: le terre emerse diventano sempre più aride. Secondo il rapporto della Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite per la Lotta alla Desertificazione ed agli Effetti della Siccità, più di tre quarti delle terre emerse sono diventate permanentemente più secche negli ultimi 30 anni, a causa dell’emissione dei gas serra. Questa trasformazione coinvolge attualmente 2,3 miliardi di persone e si prevede che entro la fine del secolo il numero possa salire a 5 miliardi.

    Nonostante i recenti disastri legati all’acqua si siano intensificati in molte parti del mondo, i dati del rapporto mostrano che il 77,6% delle terre emerse ha subito un cambiamento irreversibile, corrispondente a una crescita di 4,3 milioni di chilometri quadrati, quasi la metà dell’Europa. Questo passaggio da territori ‘umidi’ a ‘zone aride’ ha implicazioni disastrose per l’agricoltura, gli ecosistemi e le popolazioni locali.

    Il Segretario esecutivo dell’Unccd, Ibrahim Thiaw, ha sottolineato che questa è la prima volta che la crisi dell’aridità è stata documentata in modo chiaro, evidenziando una minaccia esistenziale per miliardi di persone. Le aree più colpite includono quasi tutta l’Europa, parti degli Stati Uniti occidentali, il Brasile, parti dell’Asia e l’Africa centrale. Con il riscaldamento globale in corso, si stima che fino a 5 miliardi di persone potrebbero vivere in zone aride entro la fine del secolo.

    Questo cambiamento irreversibile richiede azioni immediate e urgenti. Come ha sottolineato Barron Orr, responsabile scientifico dell’Unccd, l’adattamento non è più una scelta, ma una necessità per affrontare le gravi conseguenze dell’inazione di fronte a questa sfida globale.
